Above is a brilliant photo, which would have fit nicely into our tribute to the classic 1970s afro, of U.S. actress and singer Radiah Frye, made by famed black photographer Kwame Brathwaite. It dates from around 1971. If you spend a lot of time on our website, you may have said to yourself that Frye looks a lot like this person, but no, they’re different. That photo is documentably credited to Ruiko Yoshida. Why Brathwaite and Yoshida both played around with similar styles, even to the extent of afros, beads, and forehead moles, is a mystery. Tribute? Apprenticeship? There’s no way to know. But we’re sure about the attributions. If we’re wrong, Japan based Towa Pictures Company Limited was wrong about Yoshida, and the entire American art community is wrong about Brathwaite. In any case, Frye acted in the films Goodbye Emmanuelle, Madame Claude, and Spermula—a movie we’re going to return to later—but never established a major cinematic presence. She was probably a bit more famous as a singer and general celebrity, but whatever you want to label her, she was very beautiful.
