Censored Subtitles: An Expurgated View of Foreign Films from titillation author Howard Kandel, published circa 1960 by Collectors Publications, with Brigitte Bardot on the cover. At the time it was still common practice in American theaters to censor foreign movie dialogue in order to reduce its sexual overtones, so what Kandel does here is print provocative stills from these films, and include the original dialogue as subtitles. Pretty cool idea, and all for one dollar.
1912—Pravda Is Founded
The newspaper Pravda, or Truth, known as the voice of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, begins publication in Saint Petersburg. It is one of the country’s leading newspapers until 1991, when it is closed down by decree of then-President Boris Yeltsin. A number of other Pravdas appear afterward, including an internet site and a tabloid.
