Above you see a piece of modern Mexican pulp art, a painting on posterboard featuring a scene of bizarre violence in either the old U.S. west or old Mexico. Based on the rear info it was made for a comic book called Rangers, and the specific issue was titled “El Hombre del Revolver de Oro,” or “The Man with the Golden Gun.” Clearly, it has nothing to do with the James Bond movie of the same title, or the Ian Fleming novel.
We know next to nothing about Mexican comics, but we’ve noticed their penchant for violence against vivacious women. This is a mild example. The art is signed, as you see, but it’s not easily legible, which is par for the course. If we had to guess, we’d say Gmo.R. stands for Guillermo R. The vendor, who was mostly busy on his smartphone, knew nothing about this piece. But it’s certainly interesting, wouldn’t you agree? We’ll have more from Mexico later.
