Filmmaker Paul Jilbert has put together a documentary entitled Painting the Last Rose of Summer, which details the work and life of one of the greatest pulp illustrators in history—Robert McGinnis. McGinnis painted posters for Hollywood films Dr. No and Barbarella, among many others, and for an array of 60s crime novels written by the immortals of the art form. If you don’t know Robert McGinnis, this direct-to-DVD documentary is the easiest way to get to know his work.
1939—Holiday Records Strange Fruit
American blues and jazz singer Billie Holiday records “Strange Fruit”, which is considered to be the first civil rights song. It began as a poem written by Abel Meeropol, which he later set to music and performed live with his wife Laura Duncan. The song became a Holiday standard immediately after she recorded it, and it remains one of the most highly regarded pieces of music in American history.
