We’ll admit we weren’t convinced the cool and regal Barbara Stanwyck could make her 1943 drama Lady of Burlesque work. But we were wrong—she carried it off convincingly and entertainingly. Any movie from that year was constrained by the Hays Code, so it wasn’t as racy as it might have been ten years earlier, but Stanwyck inhabited her role of veteran peeler Dixie Daisy with conviction. It’s a movie worth watching entirely thanks to her ability to play haughty, earthy, and everything between.
