Above: a simple but effective Victor Kalin cover for The Blonde Died Dancing by Kelley Roos, along with the flipside, originally 1949, with this Dell version coming in 1958. The book is about devoted wife Connie Barton, whose husband Steve becomes the main suspect in the murder of a dance teacher. Connie goes to the dance school, applies for and obtains the vacant teacher position, and proceeds to sift through the students, seeking to exonerate her husband, who’s become a fugitive from police. As usual with husband/wife narratives from the period, this one is lightweight, pleasant, riff-filled, and a quick read, made all the more interesting once you know Roos was a pseudonym used by real-life spouses Audrey and William Roos. In fiction, pleasantness is often enough.
