The crime drama Vice Raid is a b-movie, but this beautiful photo-illustrated promo poster featuring bombshell Mamie Van Doren gets an a-plus. It’s designed a bit like a tabloid magazine cover to excellent effect. The movie revolves around a sex trafficking gangster who sets up a vice cop he hates by hiring aspriring model Van Doren to accuse him of improper behavior. She does her job perfectly and the cop gets kicked off the force, but she gets in deeper when she accepts a fat offer from the gangster to be his kept woman. When her innocent younger sister unexpectedly shows up, it’s clear the girl will be dragged into trouble, not least because the busted cop won’t give up his crusade to bring down the gangster.
Vice Raid is solid enough, though there’s nothing special about it. Its take on big city vice doesn’t convince, and block-headed co-star Richard Coogan has zero charisma, but thankfully there’s Van Doren—always worth a watch. You might also find it a worthwhile foray if you want to see a demonstration of the total lack of bodily autonomy for women in mid-century drama. You’ve been warned. Usually we write about films on their premiere dates, but there’s disagreement on this one. Some websites say late 1959, while others say early 1960. However the copyright on Vice Raid was filed December 7, 1959, and since that’s the only official date of any sort we have for now, we’ve posted on the film today.
