MAURITIUS INTENT
Bad guys turn island of delights into gangster's paradise.

L'ultima isola del piacere is the Italian title of a West German flick originally made as Die Insel der tausend Freuden, and known in English as Island of 1000 Delights and Triangle of Venus. Filmed in Mauritius, this is a disjointed sexploitation thriller about a tennis pro who squanders his fortune due to bad gambling habits, which culminates in him losing his wife in a poker game against an evil casino owner who is also a—wait for it—white slaver. You may ask yourself why the wife agreed to be wagered. The answer is she sort of hates her husband. Hubby has a mistress, so he isn't too broken up about the outcome of the bet either. Unfortunately, his sidepiece is a greedy sort who convinces him that murdering his own aunt for her fortune might be a good idea. Meanwhile Olivia Pascal plays a private investigator working for the aunt and charged with investigating the casino owner's trafficking ring. The two plot threads weave together shabbily at best, with the murder plot taking an unexpected turn.

We watched this flick solely for the beautiful Pascal, but we have good news for our female readers: although these ’70s sexploitation movies usually have male stars of dubious physical grooming and charms, this time the male lead is Philippe Garnier, and we're pretty sure you'll like him. Unfortunately, he plays a total asshole, plus in order to see him—or Pascal for that matter—you'll have to wade through bad editing, terrible acting, a mean-spirited script, several scenes of torture, and, worst of all, an almost continuous Euro disco soundtrack. We certainly can't recommend this one, but we do like the poster. The production photos, few of which hint at the ugly subtext of the film, are interesting too. Maybe just look at those and call it a day. Die Insel der tausend Freuden premiered in West Germany today in 1978, and reached Italy at an indeterminate date sometime thereafter.

ROLLING IN THE ISLES
Betty and her friends are ripe and ready.

This Italian poster was made for a film called La porno villeggiante, which was originally released as Griechische Feigen, but which you may know as The Fruit Is Ripe. We already talked about it several years back, and suffice to say it's a breezy little erotic romp set in the Greek Isles starring Betty Verges and Olivia Pascal. Softcore movies set in foreign lands are a particular weakness of ours, and this one helped inspire our amazing trip to Mykonos, Santorini, and Naxos in in 2014. We'd go back if there weren't other islands in other oceans we need to get to, but trust us—it's worth it, even if your trip doesn't resemble the movie. There's no Italian release date on La porno villeggiante, but it had its world premiere in West Germany today in 1977. Below are some interesting promo images we located. You can read our original write up on the film here.

TEMPTATION ISLAND
Olivia Pascal heads to Hong Kong and cockfighting breaks out all around her.

This nice hand-painted and hand-lettered Belgian poster was made for the movie Vanessa, which starred German actress Olivia Pascal in the time-honored tale of a smokin' hot woman raised in a convent and suddenly loosed upon the world. Pascal is informed that her last relative has died and willed her a fantastic fortune. This relative lived in Hong Kong, so she heads there to check it out and discovers not only that the island is awash in sex, sin, and dark magic, but that her inheritance takes the form of ownership of several wildly successful bordellos. The twist here, if it qualifies, is that even though this is your basic softcore sexual awakening film, the main character never actually gets laid. She gets whipped, though, if you're into that sort of thing. Best dialogue in the movie: “Will you excuse me for a moment? Those are real fighting cocks.” As you might guess, cocks of an entirely different kind fight over Pascal, who was a big bonus in the film Griechische Feigen, aka The Fruit Is Ripe, and here spends substantial portions of the film naked, joined by luminaries like Eva Eden, Uschi Zech, and—wait for it—Astrid Boner. We're not making that last one up. We're also not recommending the movie, but Pascal gets highest marks.

FAST COMPANY
The Greek Isles work their strange magic yet again.

The above poster for Griechische Feigen, aka The Fruit Is Ripe, isn’t as artful as those we usually share, but we’re adding it to the site anyway because the movie is set in the Greek Isles—and you know we love the Greek Isles. This follows the same basic plot as other films set there, such as Summer Lovers, Lesbo, and many more—i.e., the landscape, lifestyle, and sense of timelessness bring out everyone’s inner freak. Griechische Feigen is classic sexploitation, well worth a viewing, and good for a laugh. It’s also of special note because it stars two early Pulp Intl. femmes fatales—Betty Vergès and Olivia Pascal, who you can see here and here. We don’t claim Griechische Feigen is a good film—we wouldn’t dare. But it’s certainly good inspiration for your travels, whether to Greece, or anywhere the sun shines bright on endless ocean and the nights last forever. It premiered in West Germany today in 1977.

GET IN THE HABIT
You’ll get nun and you’ll like it.

This excellent vintage poster is for the Italian nunsploitation flick Interno di un covento, which was known in English as, alternately, Within a Cloister, Within the Convent, and Behind Convent Walls. So, what exactly goes on behind convent walls? Well, they have lots of sex. With each other and with whatever men happen to be around. And they exercise naked a lot. Well, almost naked. They never take off those cornettes, no matter what, but everything else is on display, including some really lovely bushes.

All of this depravity is the work of Polish director Walerian Borowczyk, working from a novel—a novel!—by the French writer Stendhal, aka Marie-Henri Beyle. But we’re giving Borowczyk most of the credit, er, blame here, because we don’t think Stendhal had a scene in his book where a nun devirginized herself with a Jesus-faced dildo. What’s the plot here? It isn’t important. The question is, what’s the point?

Well, we’re talking about a movie made in Italy, so the point seems to have been to annoy the very powerful Catholic Church. Mission wholly accomplished, we suspect. We gotta say though, we have never gotten this fascination with nuns. But if that’s your thing, then this is your movie. It premiered in Italy today in 1978. We have a nice collection of production photos below, and if you just can’t get enough nunnage, check out this amusing post.

BLAZE PASCAL
The fruit isn’t the only thing that’s ripe.

German actress Olivia Pascal, née Olivia Gerlitzki, began in movies with 1977’s adventure Griechische Feigen, aka The Fruit Is Ripe, in which she starred with Betty Verges. Pascal has acted in scores of films since then, appearing most recently in the television series Stolberg in 2013. This great shot was published in the German magazine Filmstars ohne Hüllen in 1985. Pascal was born fifty-two years ago today.

However West's considerable popularity, already based on her risque image, only increased due to the controversy.
1971—Manson Sentenced to Death
In the U.S, cult leader Charles Manson is sentenced to death for inciting the murders of Sharon Tate and several other people. Three accomplices, who had actually done the killing, were also sentenced to death, but the state of California abolished capital punishment in 1972 and neither they nor Manson were ever actually executed.
