Can you guess what U.S. dancer Aurora Greeley’s middle name was? Yes—Borealis. When you’re named after a natural phenomenon you have a lot to live up to, but Greeley managed. She started as a stage and nightclub dancer in New York City, performing at such venues as Harlem’s Ubangi Club, but by 1929 had moved to Los Angeles and opened a dance school. Meanwhile she performed at L.A. venues such as Club Alabam and the Cotton Club (possibly a cousin of the one back east?). In 1933, she danced before King Gustaf V of Sweden while in Shanghai, which seems to indicate that her talent took her around the world. In addition, she appeared in a couple of films or shorts. This shot of her in a cool costume came from the Smithsonian Institute and was made in 1936.
