The Acid Eaters was billed as the first Hollywood underground movie, but it comes across mainly as opportunistic, a poorly made rush release designed to exploit growing national awareness of the psychedelic drug scene. Plenty of naked bodies and an appearance by the Devil himself can’t even save it. In fact, we’d ignore the film entirely if not for its promo poster, which we appreciate for its weirdness and superficial resemblance to Guy Peellaert’s comic art. Poster, yes. Movie, just say no. The Acid Eaters premiered in the U.S. today in 1968.
