ASSASSIN’S EYE

The best you can do is hope she never sees you.

This interesting tateken style promo was made for the Reiko Ike action flick Kuroi Mehyô M, known in English by the cool title Black Panther Bitch M. It premiered in Japan today in 1974, amidst Ike’s heyday when she was a huge star, appearing in more than twenty films in three years. Among those were her Girl Boss and Terrifying Girl’s High School movies, which vary in quality but are all worth a watch. There’s a flipside to this poster but we couldn’t locate a good scan of it. We’ll keep an eye out. What we did locate, though, was the movie itself, which we talked about several years back. You can check that out at this link, if you’re interested. Also, since this is a text heavy poster it made for a good excuse to include a nice visual of Ike, below. She’s probably the most featured actress on our website and we have many more images of her we’ve yet to scan and upload. Keep an eye open.

BLACK CATASTROPHE

The superstition is true—it's bad luck to cross her path.

This impressive promo poster was made for the pinku actioner Kuroi Mehyô M, aka Black Panther Bitch M, in which Japanese superstar Reiko Ike plays an assassin, whose first name is known only to start with “M,” and who’s tasked with getting rid of a troublesome gangster. This is far easier said than done, but she has all the skills a good killer-for-hire needs—she can run fast, climb well, throw bladed implements (and handy pitchforks), read lips, perform acrobatics, crush testicles, put out eyes with her fingers, execute “Tarama-style karate,” apparently a “mysterious martial art originating from the Tarama Island of Okinawa that only targets the neck of the enemy,” and wear pantsuits like a boss, whether snow white, canary yellow, or midnight black. That’s a lot of capability.

We’d love to tell you the film is brilliant. It isn’t, though. But when Reiko and her soulful eyes and shiny café au lait skin are onscreen does the plot really matter? It might to you, but it doesn’t to us, because she’s at her most beautiful in this one. She positively glows. Actually, the entire movie looks good, from the color and lighting to the reasonably convincing action choreography. As a film in the same tradition as those featuring badasses like Cleopatra Jones, Kuroi Mehyô M is probably worth a watch even for casual fans of action cinema from the era. Its Japanese title, by the way, is actually “Black Rose M.” We don’t know where the panther thing came from, but it’s an apt description for Reiko. Kuroi Mehyô M premiered in Japan today in 1974.

REIKO THE KILLER

Whether she has to use bullets, a blade or her bare hands, she’s gonna make you pay.

Above are nine vintage Japanese pinku posters from our large collection, for films featuring that scourge of evil men everywhere—Reiko Ike. These are circa 1971 to 1974, and they are, top to bottom, 1: Sukeban burûsu: Mesubachi no gyakushû, aka Girl Boss Blues: Queen Bee’s Counterattack; 2 & 3: Sukeban: Taiman shobu, aka, Girl Boss: Mano a Mano; 4: Kuroi mehyô M, aka Black Panther Bitch M; 5 & 6: Kyofu joshikôkô: Furyo monzetsu guruupu, aka Terrifying Girls’ High School: Delinquent Convulsion Group; 7: a rare and valuable round poster for Sukeban, aka Girl Boss Revenge; Sukeban; 8: Furyo bancho: Norainu kidotai, aka Wolves of the City: Alley Dog Commando.

A quick word about the last one: that is Reiko Ike on the poster, with a machine gun at lower right. We’ve seen this debated on a couple of websites, but there’s no debate—it’s her, beauty mark next to her mouth and all. Besides, her name is on the poster, left column, fifth line. The board game company Parker Brothers acquires the forerunner patents for Monopoly from Elizabeth Magie, who had designed the game (originally called The Landlord’s Game) to demonstrate the economic ill effects of land monopolism and the use of land value tax as a remedy for them. Parker Brothers quickly turns Monopoly into the biggest selling board game in America.

1991—Gene Tierney Passes Away

American actress Gene Tierney, one of the great beauties in Hollywood history and star of the seminal film noir Laura, dies in Houston, Texas of emphysema. Tierney had begun smoking while young as a way to help lower her high voice, and was hooked on cigarettes the rest of her life.

1937—Hitler Reveals His Plans for Lebensraum

Adolf Hitler holds a secret meeting with Nazi officials and states his intention to acquire “lebensraum,” or living space for Germany. An old German concept that dated from 1901, Hitler had written of it in Mein Kampf, and now possessed the power to implement it. Basically the idea, as Hitler saw it, was for the Nazis to kill, deport, or enslave the Polish, Russian and other Slavic populations to the east, whom they considered inferior, and to repopulate those lands with a Germanic upper class.

1991—Fred MacMurray Dies

American actor Fred MacMurray dies of pneumonia related to leukemia. While most remember him as a television actor, earlier in his career he starred in 1944’s Double Indemnity, one of the greatest films noir ever made.

1955—Cy Young Dies

American baseball player Cy Young, who had amassed 511 wins pitching for five different teams from 1890 to 1911, dies at the age of 88. Today Major League Baseball’s yearly award given to the best pitcher of each season is named after Young.

1970—Feral Child Found in Los Angeles

A thirteen year-old child who had been kept locked in a room for her entire life is found in the Los Angeles house of her parents. The child, named Genie, could only speak twenty words and was not able even to walk normally because she had spent her life strapped to a potty chair during the day and bound in a sleeping bag at night. Genie ended up in a series of foster homes and was given language training but after years of effort by various benefactors never reached a point where she could interact normally in society.
