This interesting photo was made in 1967 at Disneyland and shows a model costumed in a space suit and jet pack to promote the McDonnell-Douglas Flight to the Moon attraction. Disneyland always partnered with corporations to sponsor rides—before McDonnell-Douglas, Flight to the Moon had been sponsored by TWA as Rocket to the Moon. It was located in the Tomorrowland section of the park, and as the name suggests, simulated a rocket journey to our nearest celestial neighbor. It relied on a video screen, sound effects, and shaking seats to carry off the illusion. As part of the experience, there was also a mission control section where the flight was previewed and riders enjoyed a brief chat with the rocket’s captain. The journey all ended with a meteor shower that required an emergency return to Earth. In 1973 it was replaced by Mission to Mars, because by then the Moon was old hat. But it sounds like it was great fun. There was never any word on whether the missing model was found.
