HOLY CRAPS!

You won't believe the slick way she handles the dice.

Nureta sainome is the most accurately descriptive title for a movie we’ve run across in a while. In English it was called Wet Dice. We’ll let that percolate for a bit. The film starred Michiko Tsukasa, and while these Japanese sexploitation films are short (this one is seventy-two minutes), they defy quick summaries. Michiko plays a bar owner in an unsatisfactory relationship who runs into a past lover in a chō-han gambling parlor. Seven years earlier she had tried to run away from her yakuza boyfriend with this lover, but he never joined her at the train station. We find that he had a good reason for failing to show. Michiko has also recently met a young woman played by Misa Aoyama who wants to run away with her boyfriend to Siberia—of all places. The idea here is for Michiko, who has reached a middle age of regrets, to be contrasted with Misa, who has known few true disappointments apart from want, but becomes so desperate for money that she decides to sell her virginity, and may end up with the same jaded worldview as Michiko. The story has other twists and subtexts, but that’s basically the idea.

So back to the wet dice thing. In the chō-han sequences, instead of rolling the dice from a cup, Ai Yoshino drops them out of her vagina. Yeah. When you hear that, if you know a bit about Japanese cinema, you’re probably certain this is a Nikkatsu Studios movie. But it was actually released by Wakamatsu Production, and though it’s clearly imitative of Nikkatsu’s output, we can’t call it a roman porno because that was Nikkatsu’s proprietary categorization for their films. But not so fast, friends. With a little digging we learned that Nikkatsu did in fact make this movie. They funneled it to cinemas via a distribution deal through Wakamatsu. So, it is a roman porno, and the world can continue rotating on its usual axis. Now, as to whether the movie is worth watching, we’d say yes, if only to see Siberia worked in as symbolism for a barren future, but remember that roman pornos show nothing explicit, which means the sex and dice rolling and everything else is accomplished merely by suggestion. Nureta sainome premiered today in 1974.

HISTORY REWIND

The headlines that mattered yesteryear.

1927—Mae West Sentenced to Jail

American actress and playwright Mae West is sentenced to ten days in jail for obscenity because of the content of her play Sex. The trial occurred even though the play had run for a year and had been seen by 325,000 people. However West’s considerable popularity, already based on her risque image, only increased after the controversy.

1971—Manson Sentenced to Death

In the U.S, cult leader Charles Manson is sentenced to death for inciting the murders of Sharon Tate and several other people. Three accomplices, who had actually done the killing, were also sentenced to death, but the state of California abolished capital punishment in 1972 and neither they nor Manson were ever executed.

1923—Yankee Stadium Opens

In New York City, Yankee Stadium, home of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees, opens with the Yankees beating their eternal rivals the Boston Red Sox 4 to 1. The stadium, which is nicknamed The House That Ruth Built, sees the Yankees become the most successful franchise in baseball history. It eventually closes in September 2008 upon being replaced by a new Yankee Stadium.

1961—Bay of Pigs Invasion Is Launched

A group of CIA financed and trained Cuban refugees lands at the Bay of Pigs in southern Cuba with the aim of ousting Fidel Castro. However, the invasion fails badly and the result is embarrassment for U.S. president John F. Kennedy and a major boost in popularity for Fidel Castro, and also has the effect of pushing him toward the Soviet Union for protection.

1943—First LSD Trip Takes Place

Swiss scientist Albert Hofmann, while working at Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, accidentally absorbs lysergic acid diethylamide, better known as LSD, and thus discovers its psychedelic properties. He had first synthesized the substance five years earlier but hadn’t been aware of its effects. He goes on to write scores of articles and books about his creation.

Edições de Ouro and Editora Tecnoprint published U.S. crime novels for the Brazilian market, with excellent reworked cover art to appeal to local sensibilities. We have a small collection worth seeing.
Walter Popp cover art for Richard Powell's 1954 crime novel Say It with Bullets.
There have been some serious injuries on pulp covers. This one is probably the most severe—at least in our imagination. It was painted for Stanley Morton's 1952 novel Yankee Trader.
