Here’s another Robert McGinnis cover, and we have to say, this image of a woman missing one shoe and something else is beyond wonderful. The writer here was Richard S. Prather, and the cheeseball in the circle is his lead character Shell Scott. The Shell Scott mysteries sold more than forty million copies. What made the stories work is that Prather didn’t take Scott very seriously, and played him for laughs as often as he did for thrills. The books are well worth a read, if only for their effortless absurdity. But don’t expect this great cover unless you order a vintage copy from a specialty bookseller.
