Lindberg and her hair-do spice up otherwise blah Swedish sex drama.

Striking posters are usually the reason we’re drawn to watch films, but lacking beautiful promo art or an enticing premise, we watched Sängkamrater, which is known in English as Wide Open, for two reasons: Christina. Lindberg. So what did we get? We got a story about a drunken old man who moves in with his son and his son’s girlfriend Solvieg Andersson and disrupts their lives. The subplot is set off when Lindberg flies into town, and her acquaintance Gunilla Larsson’s ambitions to make extra cash leads into some dangerous circumstances. There’s not much recommendable about the movie at all, aside from the fact that Lindberg has one of her most famous nude scenes, a breast soaping photo session that also showcases her majestic black bush.

The sight of Lindberg’s girlfur was like watching footage of an exotic animal that once roamed by the millions but is now near extinction. We felt deep sadness, and possibly even cried a little. We were also overcome by the certainty that a world that had let the bush come to near-oblivion is a world gone horribly, horribly wrong. But we digress. Sängkamrater is strictly average, except for Lindberg’s majestic black bush, which you see below, because Pulp Intl. is one of the last bastions of beautiful nudity left on the internet, and we take our mandate seriously. Sängkamrater premiered in Sweden today in 1975.

DOUBLE DARING

Good to the last Droppar.

And speaking of Sweden, the rather bold poster you see here is from Akira Katô’s drama Mitsu no shitatari, which was also known by the Swedish title Droppar av honung, which seems to mean “honey dripper.” Swedish title notwithstanding, this was a Japanese production all the way. Nikkatsu had a series of Suwêden poruno flicks it released during the early 1970s—Japanese backing, Western stars, and those oh so clever softcore production values that pushed the envelope while showing nothing that could result in obscenity charges. This one starred Solveig Andersson, who was one of Sweden’s other cinematic sex symbols after Christina Lindberg, and who starred with Lindberg in Thriller—en grym film, aka Thriller: A Cruel Picture. Andersson had a more extensive career than her compatriot, though, and even appeared onscreen as recently as 2014. She acted here under her phonetic Japanese name Sorubei Andâshon. We were not able to track the movie down, sadly, but is there any need? You can tell how it goes. Mitsu no shitatari premiered in Japan yesterday in 1973.

1965—Biggs Escapes the Big House

Ronald Biggs, a member of the gang that carried out the Great Train Robbery in 1963, escapes from Wandsworth Prison by scaling a 30-foot wall with three other prisoners, using a ladder thrown in from the outside. Biggs remained at large, mostly living in Brazil, for more than forty-five years before returning to the UK—and arrest—in 2001.

1949—Dragnet Premiers

NBC radio broadcasts the cop drama Dragnet for the first time. It was created by, produced by, and starred Jack Webb as Joe Friday. The show would later go on to become a successful television program, also starring Webb.

1973—Lake Dies Destitute

Veronica Lake, beautiful blonde icon of 1940s Hollywood and one of film noir’s most beloved fatales, dies in Burlington, Vermont of hepatitis and renal failure due to long term alcoholism. After Hollywood, she had drifted between cheap hotels in Brooklyn and New York City and was arrested several times for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct. A New York Post article briefly revived interest in her, but at the time of her death she was broke and forgotten.
