Back in 2010 we discussed the 1951 Mexican drama Susana and shared a poster from that country. We recently found this French promo and liked the vibrancy of it, so we’re augmenting our coverage of the film. This piece was painted by Russian artist Boris Grinsson, a great talent who worked mostly in France and who we’ve highlighted often. Just feast your eyes on this example.
Susana, known in France as Susana la perverse, starred Rosita Quintana, Fernando Soler, and Víctor Manuel. If you check dictionaries the word perverse is defined multiple ways, but we like “willfully determined or disposed to go counter to what is expected or desired,” which is definitely the crux of the film. It’s isn’t perfect, but it’s worth a watch for Quintana’s life-wrecking femme fatale. It premiered in France today in 1952.
