DISHONOR AMONG THIEVES

She'll play by the rules—up to a point.

We think of Junko Fuji as the Keanu Reeves of vintage Japanese action movies, working with no more than three to four basic facial expressions to achieve an end result that’s always better than it should be. The above poster promotes her return as Hibotan bakuto‘s wandering gambler Oryu the Red Peony, in a sequel titled Hibotan bakuto: Isshuku ippan, aka Red Peony Gambler: Gambler’s Obligation.

In this new episode, which premiered in Japan today in 1968, Oryu has drifted into a village and been sheltered by a yakuza boss who’s trying to corner the local silk manufacturing market. Part of his plan involves buying the debts of the area mulberry farmers from local loan sharks, but the scheme instead ends up getting him killed. Junko vows revenge, and finds herself in the middle of a district-wide yakuza takeover plan. There are other plot complications, but the movie is mainly an action-drama about the yakuza code being broken for the sake of greed.

Interestingly, Junko violates the code herself—she uses a pistol. Actually, we can’t say for sure that she breaks the code, not being yakuza ourselves, but considering how shocked her enemies are when she unlimbers her rod we have to think so. At the least, it may be bad form, using a heater in a society that settles its differences with cold steel. But if it works, so be it. She needs every advantage she can get, beset as she is by six to eight blade swinging villains at a time.

Her revenge quest duly carries her toward a confrontation with the top yakuza, and along the way she picks up a couple of followers and one very useful swordsman. The choreographed action prevalent at the time might not excite modern viewers, but we love it—it’s constrained by muscle power, physical coordination, and gravity. Junko does fine within those parameters. In Hibotan bakuto: Isshuku ippan we can’t find many flaws. Proceed with confidence.

She wasn't really all that nice even before the demon showed up.


The tateken style poster you see above was made for the Japanese actioner Yôen dokufu-den: Han’nya no Ohyaku, aka Ohyaku: The Female Demon, set in Edo era Japan, and starring Junko Miyazono, Tomisaburô Wakayama, and Kunio Murai. Miyazono plays woman who as little girl survived when her prostitute mother jumped with her off a bridge, and as an adult carries a scar on her back from this traumatic suicide. She’s grown up to be an acrobat, but is treated shabbily by men just as her mother was.

She flees her circus life and hooks up with a handsome young samurai, only to learn that he plans to steal gold being transported via caravan from a government mint. She begs to help her young lover, as he also takes on a partner who tried to rob the same mint twenty years earlier, losing an arm in the process. His knowledge will hopefully be key, but like any heist, there are hidden dangers. It’s a given some will come from the protectors of the coveted goods, but sometimes they come from partners in positions of trust. That’s all we’ll say about the plot, except that Miyazono is never actually possessed by a demon. What happens is she gets a demon tattoo on her back, which we guess symbolizes her transition from somewhat shady to fully vengeful.

The movie was made by Toei Company and was the first in a trilogy of films that are often cited as precursors to the studio’s famed pinky violence cycle. We can certainly see the similarity, though this film is black and white rather than the vivid color you get with pinky violence. But all that really matters is that it’s entertaining, starting fast, incorporating nice sword action, and covering a lot of thematic ground. Very enjoyable stuff. It premiered in Japan today in 1968.

This poster was made for the classic Tomisaburô Wakayama gangster flick Kapone no shatei yamato damashi, known in English as A Boss with the Samurai Spirit. It’s the third one we’ve found for the movie, and as you already know from our previous posts, these round promos are rare. They were made only by Toei Company, as far as we know, and only for a few years during the late 1960s and early ’70s. We have others we’ll get to later. Update: with these circular promos, lately we’ve been going back into old posts and uploading the art in two halves for anyone who wants a decent-sized version of their own. That’s what we’ve done today (January 15, 2022). We’re always tinkering with old posts. You never know what you’ll find if you dig around.
Meet the new boss, nothing like the old boss.

Above, a poster for the Japanese actioner Kapone no shatei yamato damashi, aka A Boss with the Samurai Spirit, aka Capone’s Younger Brother: Heart and Speculation, starring the prolific Tomisaburô Wakayama. The movie deals with a hired killer whose latest contract turns out to have wide-ranging consequences, making him turn against his employer. We shared the original poster for this as part of a group post back in 2013. This is a re-issue poster. We don’t know exactly when it came out, but the film originally premiered in Japan today in 1971.

Below is a collection of Japanese posters for the amazingly entertaining film series Kozure Ōkami, aka Lone Wolf and Cub, starring Tomisaburô Wakayama as a warrior who has to single-handedly care for his child as legions of assassins try to murder him. More info below.

There’s one more movie, 1980’s Kozure Ōkami, aka Shogun Assassin, mainly put together using footage from the previous films, none of which had really been seen in the West to that point. Shogun Assassin, though not properly part of the series, is easy to find and as a one-off it’s fine and entertaining, but we recommend you do yourself a favor and watch the canonical films.

Hiroyuki Nakano’s sword opera Samurai Fiction challenges festival audience but ultimately leaves it satisfied.

San Sebastian in general and Cinema Caravan in particular are keeping us busy, but we have time for a quick post, so here we go. Last night we attended a screening of Hiroyuki Nakano’s 1998 adventure/comedy SF: Episode One, also known as Samurai Fiction. It’s a quirky movie, imaginatively shot mostly in black and white, and involves a young samurai on a mission to both avenge a friend’s death and retrieve a priceless sword. He encounters an ex-samurai who tries to teach him the wisdom of non-violence, with limited success. The movie is set in 1689 and looks a bit like Kurosawa’s great period pieces, but subverts that similarity with its humor and modern rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack. Since it was in Japanese with English subtitles, the mostly Basque audience was perhaps a bit baffled, but even those with language difficulties could enjoy the film’s visual creativity, and ultimately everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Watching Samurai Fiction got us thinking about our many Japanese posters, and because we actually have access to that stuff wherever we go, we decided to share five of the nicer pieces in our collection. In terms of  information on these, time is a little tight to research them carefully, but here’s what we know: poster one—nothing; poster two—Nawa Hada Jigoku: Rope Skin Hell, with Naomi Tani, 1979; poster three—we’re unsure on that one, but that’s definitely Kayoko Honoo in the art; poster four—Kapone no shatei, yamato damashi, aka A Boss with the Samurai Spirit, with Tomisaburô Wakayama, 1971; poster five—nothing. But we’ll see if we can find something about that one. See ya soon.

The way of the samurai.

Above are six posters for one of our favorite Japanese movie series, Kozure ôkami, aka Lone Wolf and Cub. Starring Tomisaburo Wakayama, these are the films that introduced us to the samurai sub-genre. At the time we loved them, and over the years we learned that they are considered cinematic triumphs, second only Akira Kurosawa’s visually ingenious samurai epics. What are they about? Well, there are plenty of reviews online of both the films and the manga they were based upon, so we don’t need to bother. The first Kozure ôkami film opened in Japan in the spring of 1972.

Ernesto “Che” Guevara, representing the nation of Cuba, speaks at the 19th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York City. His speech calls for wholesale changes in policies between rich nations and poor ones, as well as five demands of the United States, none of which are met.

2008—Legendary Pin-Up Bettie Page Dies

After suffering a heart attack several days before, erotic model Bettie Page, who in the 1950s became known as the Queen of Pin-ups, dies when she is removed from life support machinery. Thanks to the unique style she displayed in thousands of photos and film loops, Page is considered one of the most influential beauties who ever lived.

1935—Downtown Athletic Club Awards First Trophy

The Downtown Athletic Club in New York City awards its first trophy for athletic achievement to University of Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger. The prize is later renamed the Heisman Trophy, and becomes the most prestigious award in college athletics.

1968—Japan's Biggest Heist Occurs

300 million yen is stolen from four employees of the Nihon Shintaku Ginko bank in Tokyo when a man dressed as a police officer blocks traffic due to a bomb threat, makes them exit their bank car while he checks it for a bomb, then drives away in it. Under Japanese statute of limitations laws, the thief could come forward today with no repercussions, but nobody has ever taken credit for the crime.

1965—UFO Reported by Thousands of Witnesses

A large, brilliant fireball is seen by thousands in at least six U.S. states and Ontario, Canada as it streaks across the sky, reportedly dropping hot metal debris, starting grass fires, and causing sonic booms. It is generally assumed and reported by the press to be a meteor, however some witnesses claim to have approached the fallen object and seen an alien craft.

1980—John Lennon Killed

Ex-Beatle John Lennon is shot four times in the back and killed by Mark David Chapman in front of The Dakota apartment building in New York City. Chapman had been stalking Lennon since October, and earlier that evening Lennon had autographed a copy of his album Double Fantasy for him.
